This was a rebranding project for my design class. I chose a popular city from the world and was given a department of the local government at random. I picked Tokyo because it's one of the cities I want to travel to. This was paired with the department of sanitation services.
At first I was stumped because I didn't know how I was supposed to make sanitation services look cool. I mean it's just cleaning and garbage! But of course I was determined to create a design I was satisfied with, so I spent some time researching for inspiration. I looked up Tokyo Sanitation Services and nothing remotely eye-catching appeared, so I separated it into two different searches. One search was for Tokyo related aesthetics and professional logos and the other search was for sanitation/cleaning logos. I settled on the idea of using a water droplet as the main focus. I wanted to use the Japanese characters for Tokyo, because it made sense if this was a local department it would have the native language displayed. After I gathered a group of inspiration pictures with concepts or color schemes I liked, I opened Adobe Illustrator and began working. I used the pen tool to create the lines and curves for the water droplet. Then, I created a design inside the drop and typed out the text I wanted. I messed around with the fonts until I was satisfied and then began working on the color gradients. I had two gradients that I made that I was fond of, so I couldn't decide whether to make the drop pink or blue. I decided to make it blue, because it gave a more cleanliness feeling. Originally, I was going to keep the Japanese characters white, but I liked the contrast between the characters and the droplet so I made them the pink gradient. Finally, I added the black background and that was the finished product!
